Week 7 – Law Books: The Beginning of the Bible Story

Summary

Kids are introduced to the first five books of the Bible — Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy — called the Law or Torah. They learn that these books explain how everything began, God’s promises to His people, and the rules He gave to guide them. The session emphasizes that God’s story starts in Genesis and continues all the way to Jesus.

Verse

Genesis 1:1 — “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Action cue:
  • “In the beginning” – roll your hands outward like something starting to form.
  • “God created” – point upward.
  • “Heavens and earth” – stretch one hand high, the other low.
  • Repeat with growing energy to help children memorize it.

Movement: “Creation Steps” (Expanded)

Set-up:
  • Label seven floor spots or tape circles to represent the seven days of creation (plus one for “rest”).

How to play:
  1. As you call each “day,” kids take one big step forward and act it out:
  • Day 1: Light & dark – cover eyes, then open them wide.
  • Day 2: Sky – stretch arms upward.
  • Day 3: Land & plants – crouch and “grow” like a flower.
  • Day 4: Sun, moon, stars – twinkle fingers.
  • Day 5: Birds & fish – flap arms, wave like swimming.
  • Day 6: Animals & people – roar, then wave to each other.
  • Day 7: Rest – sit quietly, take a deep breath.
2.  Repeat with music for a fun rhythm activity.

Teaching tie-in:
  • “God made everything good—and that’s how His big story begins!”

Lesson: “The Beginning and the Law” (Large Group Expanded)

Visual start:
  • Hold up a Bible opened near the front. Point to the section labeled Genesis–Deuteronomy. Explain that these five books are called the Law or Torah, meaning “teaching.”

Overview idea:
  • Genesis – Beginnings (Creation, Noah, Abraham, Joseph).
  • Exodus – God saves His people (Moses and the Ten Commandments).
  • Leviticus – How God’s people worship and live holy lives.
  • Numbers – God’s people travel through the wilderness.
  • Deuteronomy – Moses sums up God’s law before they enter the Promised Land.

Illustration:
  • Draw five simple tablets or books across a whiteboard. As you name each, write one key word (e.g., Genesis – Beginnings, Exodus – Freedom, Leviticus – Rules, etc.).

Discussion:
  • “Why do you think God gave His people rules?”
  • “What does Genesis show us about who God is?”

Help kids connect that God is both Creator and Teacher.

Small Groups: “Finding Genesis and Deuteronomy” (Expanded)

Supplies:
  • Bibles for each child, sticky notes or bookmarks.

Activity:
  1. Help kids locate Genesis 1:1 together and read it aloud.
  2. Then guide them to find Deuteronomy 6:5 (“Love the Lord your God with all your heart…”).
  3. Mark both pages with bookmarks labeled Beginning and Law.
  4. Compare: “Genesis shows how God’s story starts; Deuteronomy shows how God teaches His people to follow Him.”

Extra idea:
  • Have kids divide a paper Bible graphic into five colored sections labeled for each Law book to take home.

Closer Game: “Law Books Line‑Up” (Expanded)

Set-up:
  • Make five large cards labeled Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.

How to play:
  1. Give one card to a volunteer (or to small teams).
  2. Mix the group and have kids race to line up in correct order.
  3. Once sorted, everyone cheers together: “Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy — the Law books of the Bible!”

Variation:
  • Time how fast they can do it, then try to beat the record; or mix in a few “extra” cards (like Psalms or Matthew) for them to identify and remove as “not Law.”

Teaching tie‑in:
  • “These five books are the foundation — everything else in the Bible stands on what God started here.”
Closing thought and prayer idea:
Gather kids in a circle with open Bibles and say:
“From the very beginning, God’s story has been about His love and His plan to guide His people.”

Pray: “Thank You, God, for creating us and teaching us through Your Law. Help us love You and follow Your ways as we walk in Your story.”
