Week 14 – Acts: The Church Begins

Summary

Kids see that Acts tells what happened after Jesus rose and went back to heaven: the Holy Spirit comes, the church is born, and the good news spreads. They learn that the church is people, not just a building, and that we are part of the same story today.

Verse

Acts 1:8 – “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses… to the ends of the earth.”

Action idea:
  • “Power” – show strong arms.
  • “Holy Spirit comes” – wiggle fingers down like rain.
  • “Witnesses” – point to eyes, then outwards.

Movement: “Acts Ripple Walk”

Put four signs around the room:
  • Jerusalem – Judea – Samaria – Ends of the Earth.

Kids start at “Jerusalem:
  • ” As you retell Acts 1–2 in short phrases (Jesus’ ascension, waiting, Pentecost, Peter preaching), they walk from sign to sign like ripples spreading.

At each sign they say together:
  • “Good news here!”

Tie-in:
  • Jesus said the message would start in one place and spread everywhere—and Acts shows that beginning.

Lesson: “Acts: The Church Begins” (Large group)

Where Acts sits:
  • Show that Acts comes right after the four Gospels.
  • Explain: “The Gospels tell what Jesus did on earth. Acts tells what Jesus kept doing through His Spirit and His people.”

Key scenes (very simple):
  • Jesus goes back to heaven but promises the Holy Spirit.
  • At Pentecost, the Spirit comes; Peter preaches and many believe.
  • Believers gather, pray, share, and help one another; the church grows.

Main idea in kid language:
  • “The church began when God’s people, filled with the Holy Spirit, started telling everyone that Jesus is alive and Lord.”

Small Groups: “Finding Acts and the First Church”

1.  Help kids turn to the beginning of Acts.
2.  Older kids: skim or read a few verses from Acts 2:42–47 (or a paraphrase) describing early church life—teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, prayer, sharing.
3.  On a simple page divided in four, kids draw/write:
  • “They learned about Jesus”
  • “They prayed”
  • “They shared”
  • “They praised God”
4.  Connect: “These are still things our church does today.”

Closer Game: “Church-Not-a-Church”

Explain:
  • “The church is people who follow Jesus together, not just a building.”

Call out different statements and let kids decide if that’s “church” (thumbs up / stand) or “not really church” (thumbs down / sit):
  • “People worshiping Jesus and praying together.”
  • “An empty building during the week.”
  • “Friends sharing and helping each other in Jesus’ name.”
  • “Just going to a building but not listening or caring.”

After each, briefly link back to Acts:
  • The first church loved Jesus, loved each other, and shared the good news.
