Week 32 – Thanksgiving: Finding “Thank You” Verses

Summary

Kids practice using their Bibles to find “thank you” verses, then turn those verses into short prayers and praises. They see that the Bible is full of reasons to thank God—for who He is, what He’s done, and the people around us.

Verse

A simple anchor verse:
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
  • Psalm 107:1 – “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”

Use motions (hands open for “give thanks,” point up for “Lord,” hands over heart for “love endures”).

Movement – “Thanks Zone”

Label three wall spots:
  • “Thank You for Who You Are”
  • “Thank You for What You Give”
  • “Thank You for People”

Call out things (for example: “Your family,” “Jesus dying for us,” “Food,” “God’s love never ending”), and kids move to the wall they think fits. Once there, they say, “Thank You, God, for ______.”

Lesson – “The Bible Is Full of Thank-You”

In large group:
  • Explain that the Bible uses words like “give thanks,” “thank the Lord,” “be thankful.”
  • Read 2–3 short “thank you” verses from different places (e.g., a Psalm, a Gospel story where Jesus gives thanks, a letter verse about giving thanks).
  • Show that each verse tells us what to thank God for: His goodness, His love, His gifts, other believers.

Keep it light and worshipful, not heavy.

Small Groups – “Thank-You Verse Hunt”

Each group with Bibles and a simple hunt sheet with 4–6 prompts like:
  • “Find a verse that says, ‘Give thanks to the Lord…’ (hint: in Psalms).”
  • “Find a verse that tells us to give thanks in all circumstances.”
  • “Find a verse where someone gives thanks for other people.”

Leaders guide them (especially by giving the book names) and help them:
  • Write the reference.
  • Circle who/what we thank God for in that verse (God Himself, His love, His gifts, other people).

Then each child chooses one of those verses and turns it into a one‑sentence prayer on their page:
  • “Thank You, God, because ______.”

Game – “Thankful Verse Match”

Prepare cards:
Half with short “thank you” phrases (paraphrased):
  • “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.”
  • “Give thanks in all circumstances.”
  • “I thank my God for you.”

Half with locations:
  • “Psalm,” “Letter to a church,” “Every situation.”

Kids move around to find a partner: phrase + location that fits. When pairs think they match, they come up and share:
  • Say the phrase together as a “thank you” prayer.
  • Everyone responds: “Thank You, God!”

Optional Take-Home – “Thank-You Bookmark”

Give each child a blank bookmark strip with three lines:
  • “Thank You, God, that You are ______.”
  • “Thank You, God, for giving me ______.”
  • “Thank You, God, for ______ (a person).”

Have them fill and decorate it. Encourage them to keep it in their Bible and read it on Thanksgiving Sunday or at family meals.
