Week 2 – God Made the Sky and Water

Lesson

“The God who made the sky and water also sent Jesus to love us.”

Prayer

“Jesus, thank You for making the world and loving me.”

Passage

Genesis 1:6–8

Welcome (5–10 minutes)

Set out:
  • Free play: blocks, cars, animals.
  • Table: blue-and-white coloring page (simple picture with sky, clouds, and water) plus crayons.
  • Sensory bin if possible: tub with a little water and some plastic boats (supervised).

As kids arrive, say simple lines:
  • “Today we will hear how God made the sky and the water.”
  • “God made the blue sky up high and the water down low.”
  • “Jesus made all things with God and loves us.”

Opening Prayer (echo prayer)

Children repeat after you:

“Dear God,
Thank You for loving us.
Thank You for Jesus.
Thank You for the Bible,
Your special book.
Help us listen and obey.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Use the same opening prayer every week if you like.

Songs (5–10 minutes)

Pick 2–3 songs, repeat them often through the year.

Song 1 – “The B-I-B-L-E”
Motions:
  • Hold hands like a book on “The B-I-B-L-E”.
  • Hug the “book” on “Yes, that’s the book for me”.
  • Step forward and stomp gently on “I stand alone on the Word of God”.

Song 2 – Creation chant (simple)
“God made the sky up high (reach up),
God made the water low (reach down),
Thank You God for sky and water,
Jesus loves me so.”

Add easy reach-up/reach-down motions.

Optional short chant – “This Little Light of Mine”
Motions:
  • Pointer finger “light” up in the air.
  • Cover with other hand for “hide it under a bushel? No!”
  • Move finger around for “all around the neighborhood.”

Between songs you can say: “God made light. Jesus is our light.”

Lesson

Sit kids in a circle. Have a clear bowl of water and a picture of a blue sky with clouds.

a) Simple object show
Hold up the bowl of water:
  • “Look at this water. We drink water. We wash with water. We play in water. Water is very important.”
Point to a picture (or window) of the sky:
  • “Now look up. What do you see? Sky! The sky is big and blue. Sometimes there are clouds. Sometimes it is dark and full of stars.”

b) Short lesson paragraphs
Open your Bible to Genesis 1:6–8 and hold it where kids can see.
  • “The Bible tells us that after God made light, there was water everywhere. Water, water, water! There was water down low and water up high like clouds and mist.”
  • “Then God spoke. God said there would be sky in the middle. God put water down low, like oceans, lakes, and rivers. God put water up high in the clouds. God called the space in the middle ‘sky.’ God made the sky and the water, and God said it was good!”

d) Key phrase with motions
Teach and repeat:
  • “God made sky and water. Jesus loves me.”

Motions:
  • Point up on “sky.”
  • Point down or swirl hands for “water.”
  • Point to self and hug self on “Jesus loves me.”

Say it several times: loud, whisper, with eyes closed then open, or standing/sitting.

e) Optional video (4–8 minutes)
Show a preschool Day 2 creation video about sky and water.youtube+1

After the video, ask:
  • “What did God make on Day 2?” (Sky and water!)
  • “Where is the sky?” (Up!)
  • “Who made the sky and water?” (God / Jesus!)

Repeat: “God made sky and water. Jesus loves me.”
c) Jesus connection
Point up to the sky, then gently swirl the water.

  • “Jesus is God’s Son. The Bible tells us that everything was made through Jesus. Jesus helped make the sky and the water. Jesus loves us and gives us water to drink and air to breathe. When we look at the sky and the water, we can remember that Jesus made this world and loves us.”

Craft – “Sky Up High, Water Down Low”

Goal:
  • Visual separation of sky and water, with a simple Jesus line.

Steps
  • Give each child one blue paper.
  • Help them imagine a line across the middle:
    • Top half is sky, bottom half is water.
  • On the top half, they glue cotton balls to make fluffy clouds.
  • On the bottom half, they glue blue tissue paper pieces or color with blue crayons to make water waves.
  • Add the label or write at the bottom:
    • “God made sky and water. Jesus loves me.”

Craft talk (short paragraph as they work)
  • “Up here we see the sky. Down here we see water. God made the big sky for us to see clouds and birds. God made the water for us to drink, wash, and play. Jesus helped make all these things and loves us so much.”

When most children are finished, have them hold up their picture and say together:
  • “God made sky and water. Jesus loves me.”
Supplies

  • Blue construction paper (landscape orientation).
  • Cotton balls for clouds.
  • Blue tissue paper or blue crayon for water.
  • Glue sticks.
  • Marker or printed label: “God made sky and water. Jesus loves me.”

Closing Prayer (echo prayer)

Gather kids in a circle, each holding their little “Bible.”
“Dear Jesus, thank You for the sky. Thank You for the water. Thank You for making our world. Thank You for loving me. Help me remember You when I see the sky and water.
Amen.”
