Passage

Genesis 1:14–19

Welcome (5–10 minutes)

Set out:
  • Free play: blocks, cars, animals.
  • Table: black paper and white/yellow crayons (kids can draw stars and a sun).
  • Optional: silver star stickers or foil star shapes to explore.d

As kids arrive, say simple lines:
  • “Today we will hear how God made the sun, the moon, and the stars.”
  • “The sun shines in the day, the moon and stars shine at night.”
  • “Jesus helped make them all and loves us.”

Opening Prayer (echo prayer)

Children repeat after you:

“Dear God,
Thank You for loving us.
Thank You for Jesus.
Thank You for the Bible,
Your special book.
Help us listen and obey.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Use the same opening prayer every week if you like.

Songs (5–10 minutes)

Pick 2–3 songs, repeat them often through the year.

Song 1 – “The B-I-B-L-E”
Motions:
  • Hold hands like a book on “The B-I-B-L-E”.
  • Hug the “book” on “Yes, that’s the book for me”.
  • Step forward and stomp gently on “I stand alone on the Word of God”.

Song 2 – Creation chant (simple)
“God made the sky up high (reach up),
God made the water low (reach down),
Thank You God for sky and water,
Jesus loves me so.”

Add easy reach-up/reach-down motions.

Optional short chant – Creation chant: “Day and Night”
Motions:
  • “Thank You for the bright, warm sun (arms wide, look up),
  • Thank You for the stars, each one (wiggle fingers like stars),
  • Thank You for the moon at night (make a ‘C’ moon with hands)
  • Jesus, You’re my special light.”

Repeat 2–3 times.

Lesson

Sit kids in a circle. Have pictures of the sun, moon, and stars, or simple cutouts.

a) Show pictures
Hold up a sun picture:
  • “This is the sun. The sun is very bright and very hot. It shines in the sky in the daytime and gives us light and warmth.”

Hold up a moon and stars picture:
  • “This is the moon and the stars. They shine in the sky at night. Sometimes the moon is big and round; sometimes it is a little curve. The stars are tiny lights far away.”

b) Short lesson
Open your Bible to Genesis 1:14–19 and hold it where kids can see.
  • “The Bible tells us that God made the sun, the moon, and the stars. God put the bright sun in the sky to shine in the day. God put the moon and stars in the sky to shine at night.”
  • “God made the sun and moon to help us know day and night, and to make seasons and times. God made so many stars we cannot even count them. God made the sun, moon, and stars, and God said it was good.”

d) Key phrase with motions
Teach and repeat:
  • “God made sun, moon, stars. Jesus is my light.”

Motions:
  • Circle above head for “sun.”
  • Curve hand like a “C” for “moon.”
  • Wiggle fingers up high for “stars.”
  • Point to self then heart for “Jesus is my light.”
  • Say it several times: loud, whisper, do it standing, then sitting.

e) Optional video (4–8 minutes)
Show a preschool Day 4 creation video (sun, moon, stars).youtube+1

After the video, ask:
  • “What did God make on this day?” (Sun, moon, stars!)
  • “What shines in the day?” (The sun!)
  • “Who is our light?” (Jesus!)
  • Repeat: “God made sun, moon, stars. Jesus is my light.”
c) Jesus connection
Point up as if to the sky.

"Jesus is God’s Son. The Bible tells us that everything was made through Jesus. Jesus helped make the sun, moon, and stars. The sun gives us light during the day, but Jesus is like a special light for our hearts. Jesus shows us who God is and loves us very much.”

Craft – “Night Sky God Made”

Goal:
  • A simple day-or-night sky picture that highlights what God made and the Jesus line.

Steps
  • Give each child a piece of black/dark blue paper.
  • Help them glue one big yellow circle—near the top corner—as either the sun (if you want a day picture) or moon (if you want a night picture).
  • Let them add star stickers or glue on foil stars all over the sky.
  • At the bottom, add a label or write:
    • “God made the sun, moon, and stars. Jesus is my light.”
  • Kids can draw themselves or simple hills at the bottom if there’s time.

Craft talk (short paragraph as they work)
  • “We are making a picture of the sky God made. God made the bright sun and the soft moon and all the tiny stars. Jesus helped make all these things. When we see the sun in the day and the stars at night, we can remember that Jesus is our light and He loves us.”

Have children hold up their sky pictures and say:
  • “God made sun, moon, stars. Jesus is my light.”
Supplies

  • Black or dark blue construction paper.
  • Yellow paper circles for suns or moons (or draw them).
  • Star stickers or foil star pieces (or drawn stars).
  • Glue sticks.
  • Crayons or markers.
  • Label/space to write: “God made the sun, moon, and stars. Jesus is my light.”

Closing Prayer (echo prayer)

Gather kids in a circle, each holding their little “Bible.”
“Dear Jesus, Thank You for the sun. Thank You for the moon. Thank You for the stars. Thank You for being my light. Help me trust You day and night.
Amen.”
