“The Bible helps us. The Bible shows us how to follow Jesus.”

Prayer

“Jesus, thank You for the Bible that helps me follow You.”

Passage

Psalm 119:105 (simplified: “God’s Word helps me.”).

Welcome (5–10 minutes)

Set out:
  • Free play: blocks, simple puzzles, picture books.
  • Table: coloring page of a child with an open Bible and crayons.
  • Place a real Bible in a special spot (small stand or pillow).

As kids arrive, say simple lines:
  • “Today we will hear how the Bible helps us.”
  • “The Bible is God’s special book.”
  • “The Bible tells us about Jesus and helps us follow Him.”

Opening Prayer (echo prayer)

Children repeat after you:

“Dear God,
Thank You for loving us.
Thank You for Jesus.
Thank You for the Bible,
Your special book.
Help us listen and obey.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Songs (5–10 minutes)

Pick 2–3 songs, repeat them often through the year.

Song 1 – “The B-I-B-L-E”
Motions:
  • Hold hands like a book on “The B-I-B-L-E”.
  • Hug the “book” on “Yes, that’s the book for me”.
  • Step forward and stomp gently on “I stand alone on the Word of God”.

Song 2 – “Jesus Loves Me”
Motions:
  • point to self on “me,”
  • hug on “loves,”
  • hands like a book on “Bible tells me so.”

Song 3 – “The Bible Helps Me” chant
“The Bible helps me every day (open book),
Shows me Jesus’ loving way (point up),
Thank You, God, for words so true,
Help me do what pleases You.”

Repeat 2–3 times with motions.

Lesson

Sit kids in a circle, with the Bible in your hands.

a) Show the Bible again
Hold up the Bible, let a few kids gently touch the cover.
  • “What is this book called?” (Let them answer.)
  • “Yes, this is the Bible. The Bible is God’s special book. It is full of true stories and true words from God.”

b) Short lesson paragraphs
Speak very simply:
  • “The Bible helps us know who God is. It tells us that God made everything and that God loves us. The Bible helps us know right from wrong—what is good to do and what is not good.”
  • “The Bible also helps us when we are sad or afraid. In the Bible, God says He is with us and will help us. The Bible is like a light for our path, showing us the best way to go.”
  • (If you wish, you can summarize “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” in preschool words.)

d) Key phrase with motions
Teach and repeat:
  • “The Bible helps me. Jesus leads me.”

Motions:
  • Hands like an open book on “Bible”.
  • Point to self on “me”.
  • Point up on “Jesus”.
  • Step in place or move one hand forward like walking on “leads me”.

Say it several times: loud, whisper, standing and sitting.

e) Optional short “Bible helps” activity
Show a few simple picture cards:
  • Child sharing a toy.
  • Child praying.
  • Child comforting a sad friend.

Hold up each card and say:
“The Bible helps me share.”
“The Bible helps me pray.”
“The Bible helps me be kind.”

Ask: “Who does the Bible show us?” (Jesus!)

Repeat: “The Bible helps me. Jesus leads me.”
c) Jesus connection
Hold the Bible against your heart.

“The best thing the Bible does is this: the Bible shows us Jesus. From the beginning to the end, the Bible tells us that God loves us and sent His Son, Jesus. Jesus lived, died on the cross for our sins, and came back to life. When we read the Bible, we learn how to follow Jesus and how much He loves us.”

Craft – “Bible Lamp” Bookmark

Goal:
  • Simple craft that ties “Bible helps me” to a picture they can use in a Bible at home or in class.

Steps
  • Give each child one bookmark strip.
  • Help them glue a small lamp/light shape at the top, or draw a little lamp/light there.
  • Let them decorate the bookmark with simple designs (hearts, crosses, stars).
  • Add the phrase on the bookmark:
    • “The Bible helps me. Jesus leads me.”
  • Optional: Punch a hole at the top and tie a short ribbon (if you have time and helpers).

Craft talk (short paragraph as they work)
  • “You are making a bookmark to go in a Bible. The little light reminds us that the Bible helps us see God’s way. When you see this bookmark, remember: the Bible helps you, and Jesus leads you every day.”

When they are finished, invite them to hold up their bookmarks and say:
  • “The Bible helps me. Jesus leads me.”
Supplies

  • Strips of cardstock for bookmarks.
  • Small pre-cut “lamp” or “light” shapes (or simple flame shape), or kids can draw a little light.
  • Glue sticks.
  • Crayons or markers.
  • Printed/handwritten phrase: “The Bible helps me. Jesus leads me.”

Closing Prayer (echo prayer)

Gather kids in a circle, each holding their little “Bible.”
“Dear Jesus, Thank You for the Bible. Thank You that it helps me. Thank You for showing me the right way to go. Please lead me every day. I love You.
Amen.”
