Week 16 – Abraham’s Big Promise

Lesson

“God promised Abraham a big family. Jesus is the special child from that family who blesses us.”

Prayer

“Thank You, Jesus, for keeping God’s promises.”

Passage

Genesis 12, 15 (simplified).

Welcome (5–10 minutes)

Set out:
  • Free play: people figures, tents or blocks to build “tents,” toy animals.
  • Table: coloring page of Abraham looking at stars or a simple tent scene, plus crayons.

As kids arrive, say simple lines:
  • “Today we will hear about a man named Abraham.”
  • “God made Abraham a big promise.”
  • “God kept His promise by sending Jesus.”

Opening Prayer (echo prayer)

Children repeat after you:

“Dear God,
Thank You for loving us.
Thank You for Jesus.
Thank You for the Bible,
Your special book.
Help us listen and obey.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Songs (5–10 minutes)

Pick 2–3 songs, repeat them often through the year.

Song 1 – “The B-I-B-L-E”
Motions:
  • Hold hands like a book on “The B-I-B-L-E”.
  • Hug the “book” on “Yes, that’s the book for me”.
  • Step forward and stomp gently on “I stand alone on the Word of God”.

Song 2 – “Jesus Loves Me”
Motions:
  • point to self on “me,”
  • hug on “loves,”
  • hands like a book on “Bible tells me so.”

Song 3 – “God Made Me, God Loves Me” chant
“God made me (point to self),
God loves me (hug self),
The Bible tells me so (book hands).
Jesus came,
Knows my name,
He’s with me where I go (walk in place).”

Repeat 2–3 times.

Lesson

Sit kids in a circle. Have a small tent made from a cloth over blocks, or a picture of a tent, and a dark blue paper with star stickers.

a) Abraham and the stars
Show the tent or picture.
  • “The Bible tells us about a man named Abraham. Abraham loved God and listened to Him. Abraham lived in tents and moved from place to place.”
Show the star picture.
  • “One night, God brought Abraham outside and told him to look at the sky. The sky was full of stars. Can you imagine lots and lots of stars?”
Let kids pretend to look up at stars.

b) God’s big promise
  • “God made Abraham a big promise. God said, ‘Abraham, I will give you a very big family—more people in your family than the stars in the sky.’ Abraham was very old and did not have many children, but God said He would do it.”
  • “Abraham trusted God. Even though he couldn’t see it yet, he believed that God would keep His promise. God always keeps His promises.”

d) Key phrase with motions
Teach and repeat:
  • “God made a promise. God kept His promise in Jesus.”

Motions:
  • Point up on “God.”
  • Hook pinkies or fold hands on “promise.”
  • Thumbs up on “kept.”
  • Point up (Jesus) and then to your heart on “in Jesus.”

Say it several times: loud, whisper, standing and sitting.
c) Jesus connection
Hold the star picture and then place your hand on the Bible.

“Many, many years later, one of Abraham’s great-great-great-grandchildren was born. His name is Jesus. God kept His promise to Abraham by sending Jesus into Abraham’s big family. Jesus came to bless the whole world, just like God said. When we believe in Jesus, we become part of God’s big family too.”

Craft – “Stars of God’s Promise”

Goal:
  • Simple starry sky reminding children of God’s promise to Abraham and Jesus as the promised One.

Steps
  • Give each child a dark paper.
  • Help them place many star stickers or glue paper stars all over the “sky.”
  • Encourage them to add more small stars with white/yellow crayons.
  • Add the phrases at the bottom or side:
    • “God made a big promise to Abraham.”
    • “God kept His promise in Jesus.”
  • Optional: Draw a little tent at the bottom with “Abraham” near it.

Craft talk (short paragraph as they work)
  • “You are making a sky full of stars, like the sky Abraham saw. God promised Abraham a big family, more than the stars. God kept His promise by sending Jesus in Abraham’s family. When you see stars, you can remember that God keeps His promises and that Jesus is the promised One.”

  • When finished, invite them to “read” their booklet by pointing at each page while you say:
    • “God made a promise.”
    • “God kept His promise in Jesus.”
Supplies

  • Dark blue or black paper.
  • Star stickers or small star shapes punched/cut from yellow paper.
Glue sticks (if using paper stars).
  • Crayons/markers (white/yellow for extra stars).
  • Label/space to write:
    • “God made a big promise to Abraham.”
    • “God kept His promise in Jesus.”

Closing Prayer (echo prayer)

Gather kids in a circle, each holding their little “Bible.”
“Dear Jesus, Thank You for Abraham.
Thank You that God kept His promise. Thank You for coming as part of Abraham’s family.
Help me trust Your promises. Thank You that I can be in God’s big family too. Amen.”
