Lesson

“God saved His people at the sea. Jesus came to save us from our sin.”

Prayer

“Jesus, thank You for saving me.”

Passage

Exodus 14.

Welcome (5–10 minutes)

Set out:
  • Free play: people figures, simple “water” (blue scarves or blocks), toy chariots or animals.
  • Table: coloring page of Moses with water on both sides and crayons.

As kids arrive, say simple lines:
  • “Today we will hear how God helped His people cross the Red Sea.”
  • “The water was in the way, but God made a path.”
  • “God rescued His people. Jesus rescues us too.”

Opening Prayer (echo prayer)

Children repeat after you:

“Dear God,
Thank You for loving us.
Thank You for Jesus.
Thank You for the Bible,
Your special book.
Help us listen and obey.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Songs (5–10 minutes)

Pick 2–3 songs, repeat them often through the year.

Song 1 – “The B-I-B-L-E”
Motions:
  • Hold hands like a book on “The B-I-B-L-E”.
  • Hug the “book” on “Yes, that’s the book for me”.
  • Step forward and stomp gently on “I stand alone on the Word of God”.

Song 2 – “Jesus Loves Me”
Motions:
  • point to self on “me,”
  • hug on “loves,”
  • hands like a book on “Bible tells me so.”

Song 3 – “God Made Me, God Loves Me” chant
“God made me (point to self),
God loves me (hug self),
The Bible tells me so (book hands).
Jesus came,
Knows my name,
He’s with me where I go (walk in place).”

Repeat 2–3 times.

Lesson

Sit kids in a circle. Use a blue cloth or paper for “water,” people figures for Moses and Israel, and maybe a stick for Moses’ staff.

a) God’s people at the sea
Lay the blue cloth in a line.
  • “The Bible tells us God’s people were slaves in Egypt. God used Moses to bring them out. They walked and walked until they came to a big sea called the Red Sea. There was a huge wall of water in front of them.”
Place the people in front of the “water.”
  • “Behind them, the king of Egypt (Pharaoh) sent his army. There were soldiers and chariots coming. God’s people felt afraid. Water in front, army behind—they didn’t know what to do!”

b) God opens the sea
Hold a “staff” (stick or ruler) like Moses.
  • “Moses told the people, ‘Do not be afraid. God will help you.’ God told Moses to raise his staff over the sea. When Moses obeyed, God sent a strong wind.”
Slowly pull the blue cloth apart so there is a “dry” path between.
  • “The water moved to the sides, like big walls. God made a dry path right through the middle of the sea! God’s people walked across on dry ground, waters on both sides, and God kept them safe.”
Move the people across the dry path.
  • “When they were safely across, the water came back down. The army could not catch them. God rescued His people.”

d) Key phrase with motions
Teach and repeat:
  • “God made a way. Jesus is my way.”

Motions:
  • Push hands apart like opening water on “made a way.”
  • Point up (Jesus) and then to self on “Jesus is my way.”

Say it several times: loud, whisper, walking in place when you say “way.”
c) Jesus connection
Hold the people on the far side, all “safe.”

“The Red Sea was too big for the people to cross by themselves. God had to make a way. The Bible tells us that Jesus is God’s way for us. We cannot fix our sin by ourselves. Jesus came to rescue us from sin and death. Jesus died on the cross and came back to life, so we can be safe with God forever. Just like God made a way through the sea, Jesus makes a way for us to be close to God.”

Craft – “Path Through the Sea”

Goal:
  • Visual of water parted with dry path and a simple Jesus line.

Steps
  • Give each child a paper. If white, help them color two wide blue “water” strips on left and right sides, leaving a middle strip plain.
  • Help them glue a brown/yellow strip down the middle as the “dry path.”
  • Let them draw or glue little people walking on the path.
  • Add the phrase at the bottom:
    • “God made a way. Jesus is my way.”
  • Optional: Add a little Moses figure at the front with a “stick.”

Craft talk (short paragraph as they work)
  • “Your picture shows the Red Sea with water on both sides and a dry path in the middle. God made a way for His people when there was no way. He kept them safe. Jesus is our way to God. When we feel stuck or scared, we can remember: ‘God made a way. Jesus is my way.’”

  • When finished, invite them to “read” their booklet by pointing at each page while you say:
    • “God made a way. Jesus is my way.”
Supplies

  • Blue paper (or white paper you color blue on both sides).
  • Brown or yellow strip of paper for “dry path.”
  • Small people shapes or stickers, or kids can draw people.
  • Glue sticks.
  • Crayons/markers.
  • Label/space to write: “God made a way. Jesus is my way.”

Closing Prayer (echo prayer)

Gather kids in a circle, each holding their little “Bible.”
“Dear Jesus, Thank You for helping Moses and Your people at the Red Sea.
Thank You for making a way when there was no way.
Thank You for being my way to God.
Help me trust You when I feel scared or stuck. Amen.”
