  • Free play: nativity set pieces (wise men, star, baby Jesus), small boxes or blocks for “gifts.”
  • Table: coloring page of three wise men following a star to Jesus, plus crayons.

As kids arrive, say simple lines:
  • “Today we will hear about the wise men.”
  • “They followed a star to find Jesus.”
  • “They brought gifts to worship Him.”

Opening Prayer (echo prayer)

Children repeat after you:

“Dear God,
Thank You for loving us.
Thank You for Jesus.
Thank You for the Bible,
Your special book.
Help us listen and obey.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Songs (5–10 minutes)

Pick 2–3 songs, repeat them often through the year.

Song 1 – Away in a Manger - A Listener Kids Christmas

Song 2 – “Jesus Loves Me”
Motions:
  • point to self on “me,”
  • hug on “loves,”
  • hands like a book on “Bible tells me so.”

Song 3 – Simple star song
(Tune: “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”)
“Wise men followed shining star,
Travelled from their homes so far.
They came looking for the King,
Baby Jesus, gifts to bring.
Wise men followed shining star,
Jesus’ light can lead our hearts.”

Motions:
Fingers as twinkling star, walk in place for “travelled,” rock arms like baby on “Baby Jesus.”

Lesson

Sit kids in a circle. Use: three “wise men” figures, a star, baby Jesus.

a) A star and a journey
Hold up the star.
  • “The Bible tells us that some wise men saw a special star in the sky. They knew this star meant a special King had been born.”
Show the wise men starting to “walk.”
  • “The wise men lived far away. They packed their things and traveled a long way to find the new King. They followed the star.”
Walk them slowly around the circle toward the “house” or manger area.

b) Wise men find Jesus
Place baby Jesus in a simple house or stable area.
  • “The star led the wise men to the place where Jesus was. By this time, Jesus was still very young. The wise men were so happy when they found Him.”
  • Move the wise men near Jesus and have them bow.
  • “They bowed down and worshiped Jesus. They knew He was a very special King from God.”
Show small “gifts” (little boxes or pretend).
  • “The wise men opened their treasures and gave Jesus gifts—gold, and other special things. They showed their love and honor for Jesus.”

d) Key phrase with motions
Teach and repeat:
  • “The wise men worshiped Jesus. Jesus is my King.”

Motions:
Bow head or upper body on “worshiped Jesus.”
Point up (Jesus) then to self on “my King,” and make a small crown shape on your head.

Say it several times: loud, whisper, standing and sitting.
c) Jesus connection (King for us)
Hold baby Jesus carefully.

“Jesus was not just a King for the wise men long ago. Jesus is our King too. God sent Jesus to be the King who loves us, leads us, and saves us from our sins. We may not bring Him gold, but we can give Him our hearts and our love. We can worship Jesus with our songs, prayers, and lives.”

Craft – “Wise Men Follow the Star”

Goal: Wise men, star, and Jesus with a simple worship line.

Steps
  • Give each child a paper.
  • Help them glue the house/stable or draw a simple house at one side with a small “baby Jesus” mark.
  • Glue wise men on a path coming toward the house.
  • Place a star sticker or draw a big star above the house.
  • Add the phrase at the bottom:
    • “The wise men worshiped Jesus. Jesus is my King.”
  • Children can draw gifts in the wise men’s hands.

Craft talk (short paragraph as they work)
  • “Your picture shows the wise men following the star to Jesus. When they found Him, they worshiped Him and gave Him gifts. We can’t bring Jesus gold, but we can give Him our love and praise. When you look at this picture, remember: ‘The wise men worshiped Jesus. Jesus is my King.’”

When finished, have children hold up their pictures and say:
“The wise men worshiped Jesus. Jesus is my King.”

  • Pre-cut wise men shapes or simple people shapes.
  • Star stickers or large star cutout.
